Project Goals

The ultimate goal for this 18 acre project is to show how a passive solar home would work near the Poconos. This structure uses natural heating and cooling sources that allow it to maintain 60 to 70 degrees year round. Each structure of this type built will allow us to further understand how we can incorporate this technology into the mountains of Pennsylvania.

Resources on Earthships/Earthhomes:

Goal 1: A Passive Heating and Cooling Home

Earth

The earths year round temperature is 57 degree, so let the earth hug your building for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

Sun

Build the house facing the south to maximize the suns energy. Take advantage of the low sun in the winter solstice and the high sun in the summer solstice.

Air

Trap and protect the air that you have conditioned with the sun and the earth. Each home should have 2 to 3 air locks (doors) before you can exit the home.

Goal 2: Water, Food And Power

The house is also a machine that collects water and power and grows food.

Water

Water is collected off of the roof when it rains.

Food

The house has an indoor greenhouse the whole length of the south side of the building (where the sun is)

Power

The house has solar panels on the convenient south facing roof.
